The Museum

A dedication to all charcuterie lovers
and their stories

To walk through the doors of MuSa is to discover the flavors and colors that enchant our palates and senses. The visit offers an itinerary between the past and present and is illustrated with videos that explain modern production methods – giving an insider’s view of the production facility, descriptive texts and anecdotes about single products, antique machinery, artifacts, and a display of spices and herbs used in the making of charcuterie.

Why create
a Charcuterie Museum?

MuSa opened its doors in 2013 and is located at Villani’s main offices, precisely where the family company originated over a century ago.

Since the culture and economy of the area are strongly linked to meat processing, Castelnuovo Rangone is the ideal place to create a museum whose main goal is to share the knowledge and art of charcuterie making.

“The idea to exhibit documents and antiques, illustrate the methods of production, and tell the story of the foundations, not only of our company but also of our region, dates back a long time. With MuSa, we wanted to capture and share the knowledge of the art of charcuterie making”.

Giuseppe Villani, CEO Villani Salumi

Museo della Salumeria was founded for several reasons, one of which was to present the company that is family run since its inception in the late 1800s. The company has now reached its fifth generation of management crossing three centuries of Italian history. So, the essence of the museum is to pay tribute to a manufacturing segment that orignated in Castelnuovo Rangone, also thanks to the Villani family, and that contributed to the economic growth and identity of the area. The district currently employs, directly and in related segments, the majority of families living in the area who have made our adventure possible.

Along with the historical reasons for the establishment of the museum, there are “philosophical” ones associated to the evolution of the product. Charcuterie is not considered a piece food simply made for consumption, but it is an element that combines culinary pleasure with well being. A great deal of innovation has been introduced in charcuterie making to meet the changing nutritional needs and habits of consumers. Products now contain less fat and less salt and are integrated in a healthy lifestyle.
